As a 2005 HOPE Awards winner for education, LHHA’s Homebuyer Education Program (HBE) has served the residents of Little Haiti since 1992 by addressing the following issues in the community: lack of understanding of financial institutions; lack of trust in institutions; and their language barrier. Recruitment for the program is done over the radio, through churches and community groups, and through personal referrals. As awareness of the program has spread, more and more families have been able to solidify their financial future through realizing the dream of homeownership.
The Program
The Homeownership Training Program consists of: a general orientation or information session; two weeks of Homebuyer Education (HBE) classes; one-on-one counseling sessions with a certified homebuyer counselor; and post-occupancy support. All of the homeownership program resources are available in Haitian-Creole to accommodate our clients’ needs.
The HBE program is a two-week course during closing and transitioning into occupancy of a home. The class provides step-by-step instructions about the structure of the home buying process in the United States. Our HBE class is broken up into two parts: orientation and class. A certificate is issued at the end of the process.
